Reading time: 4 minutes
We must drink between 1.5 and 3 liters of water daily to stay healthy. If you feel you are not consuming enough, make it a habit to place a fresh water bottle near you! Every time you look at it, you’ll remember to drink.
The body’s water needs vary depending on age, season, and physical activity. For example, we need more water in summer than in winter and more during the day than at night. The type of diet also influences our water needs. If we eat dry and salty foods, we will need more water than if we eat foods with a high water content.
Why is it so important to drink water?
- Hydration: water is the best thirst quencher. Contrary to what we might think, other beverages with artificial additives, such as soft drinks, do not perform this function optimally.
- Essential bodily functions: our body functions best when sufficient water is available. For example, drinking enough water increases our alertness and resistance to disease.
- Metabolic processes: water is vital for the breakdown of food in the body, so it is essential for the adequate function of our metabolism and digestion. It is also responsible for the excretion of waste through urine.
- Thermoregulation: water in the body helps regulate body temperature. This liquid maintains a constant temperature by absorbing heat and releasing it as sweat.
- Transport system: water is responsible for transporting nutrients, hormones, and enzymes in the blood. It is also responsible for an essential function: transporting oxygen to all our cells!
- Composition of joints and organs: water is involved in lubricating joints (synovial fluid) and digestive system organs (mucus and saliva).
- Mental health: sufficient body water helps combat insomnia and other disorders such as anxiety. Teas and infusions are an effective way to consume this liquid by adding active components of natural origin.
Remember to stay hydrated! Consuming at least one and a half liters of water is adequate for a sedentary person. This quantity should be increased if you are physically active. Now that spring is here, also consider that it will be necessary to increase water consumption whenever it is warm!
