Combat colitis naturally
Colitis is an inflammation of the colon that can cause abdominal pain, diarrhea, bloating, and other uncomfortable symptoms.
While medical treatment is crucial, some home remedies can help alleviate symptoms naturally.
Here we share a simple, effective home remedy based on natural ingredients that you can incorporate into your routine to combat colitis.
Reading time: 3 minutes
Ingredients
- 1 cup of warm water
- 1 tablespoon of flaxseed
- 1 teaspoon of organic honey (optional)
- Juice of half a lemon
Preparing the flaxseed gel
Flaxseed is rich in fiber and omega-3 fatty acids, which help reduce inflammation in the colon. To prepare the gel, let one tablespoon of flaxseeds soak in a cup of warm water overnight (about 8 hours). The next morning, you’ll notice that the seeds have formed a gel-like substance.
Strain the water to separate the flaxseeds. You will obtain a thick, gelatinous liquid that you can drink on an empty stomach.
If you prefer, you can add one teaspoon of organic honey to sweeten and the juice of half a lemon, which acts as a natural anti-inflammatory. Lemon also helps balance pH levels in the body.
Why does this remedy work?
Flaxseed
Besides being rich in fiber, flaxseed acts as a natural softener for the digestive system. The gel formed when flaxseed is hydrated coats the intestinal walls, helping to calm inflammation and ease bowel movements.
Honey
Honey has antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties that can help reduce intestinal irritation and promote healthy digestion.
Lemon
Although acidic to taste, lemon has an alkalizing effect on the body, which can help reduce acidity and relieve colitis symptoms. Additionally, its vitamin C content strengthens the immune system and promotes healing.
It’s best to drink this gel in the morning, on an empty stomach, about 30 minutes before breakfast. This allows the gel to act on the intestinal walls without interference. You can consume it daily or at least 3 times a week for best results.
Additional tips for combating colitis
- Avoid irritating foods: Try to eliminate processed foods, saturated fats, dairy, and caffeinated beverages, as they can worsen colitis symptoms.
- Drink enough water: Stay well-hydrated to support digestive function and help flush out toxins.
- Incorporate probiotics: Fermented foods like yogurt or kefir can help restore the balance of healthy bacteria in the gut, reducing inflammation.
