Unfortunately, diabetes is not always preventable. As an immune disorder, type 1 diabetes cannot be prevented by changing our lifestyle. However, the most common form of diabetes, type 2 diabetes, is preventable!
Getting enough exercise, eating a balanced diet, not smoking, and having a healthy weight go a long way toward minimizing the risk of getting this disease. According to the WDF, we can reduce our risk in half by following these recommendations.
Keep moving
This point is crucial. Move your body for at least half an hour a day! You don’t necessarily have to go to the gym or play an intense sport. You can also walk, ride a bike, or stretch. Incorporate exercise into your daily life: ride your bike to work or shopping or take the stairs instead of the elevator.
Eat a healthy diet
Eat a variety of foods in moderation. Ingest as few sweets as possible and avoid sugary drinks and fruit juices. Eat plenty of fruits and vegetables, choose whole-grain products, lean and unprocessed meat, and use little salt. When frying, use unsaturated fats such as vegetable oil and liquid margarine.

Stop smoking
We all know that smoking is unhealthy and that quitting is not easy. However, smoking greatly increases the risk of type 2 diabetes – by 30% to 40%!
Maintain a healthy weight
A healthy weight is also important. An overweight person’s body often has trouble keeping blood sugar in balance, which can lead to type 2 diabetes.
