Supplements: yes or no?
The world of supplements can feel overwhelming—vitamins, minerals, adaptogens, superfoods… Do you need them? Are they safe? Which ones should you choose?
Reading time: 3 minutes
Before adding any supplement to your routine, it’s important to understand how they work and when they’re truly necessary. Here’s what you need to know to make informed and confident decisions for your well-being.
What are supplements, and what are they for?
Dietary supplements include vitamins, minerals, amino acids, enzymes, herbal extracts, and other compounds designed to complement your diet.
According to the National Institutes of Health (NIH), “supplements can help ensure adequate intake of essential nutrients or help reduce the risk of certain diseases, but they do not replace a healthy and balanced diet.”
In other words, supplements are not magic solutions, but they can be powerful allies in specific situations.
When can supplements be helpful?
- When nutritional deficiencies are confirmed (such as iron, B12, vitamin D, or magnesium).
- During stages of high physiological demand: pregnancy, breastfeeding, menopause, or prolonged stress.
- When following restrictive diets (like vegan or gluten-free).
- When seeking specific support (energy, digestion, hormonal health, or immunity).
Are there risks to taking them without guidance?
Yes. Even though many supplements are natural, that doesn’t mean they’re risk-free. Some may interact with medications, cause imbalances if taken in excess, or simply not be appropriate for your individual needs.
It’s always best to consult a healthcare professional before making significant changes to your routine!
How to choose quality supplements
Choosing wisely is key—not all products on the market are created equal. Look for:
1) Supplements manufactured in NSF- or GMP-certified labs.
2) Clear labels with no artificial additives.
3) Brands that are transparent about their formulas and production processes.
At SALUD, for example, all our supplements are made in NSF-certified labs to ensure purity, potency, and safety.
Taking supplements should never be a random decision. They’re powerful tools that require mindfulness, quality, and professional guidance. Listen to your body, and seek expert support.
